How to shop the Toronto Bike Show

How to shop The Bike Show without spinning your wheels

The countdown to Spring is on! Is there a shiny new set of wheels in your future? If you lean towards two wheels versus four, then you’re going to want to hit the Toronto International Bicycle Show between March 1-3, 2019. Sure you could head in to your closest Toronto bike shop, but this is the top opp to scope out all things bike-related in one place, but the world’s largest consumer bike show promises

an adrenaline-boosting X-Jam Competition, a test track for e-bikes, a Kids Zone, and a bike polo tournament this year! While the Bike Show is the perfect place to buy a new set of wheels, that gargantuan selection of bikes can be overwhelming. Here are 5 ways to shop the show and emerge relatively unscathed.

  1. Know what kind of rider you are. Do you bike primarily to get places? Then you’re looking for a commuter bike, so ask about hybrid or single speed models. Do you head for Toronto’s bike trails as soon as the snow melts? Then check out hybrids or a mountain bikes for trails. Love dirt in your teeth and bone rattling steeps? Then you’re head for the road/gravel or cyclocross bikes.
  2. Decide on your budget. Bikes can cost thousands of dollars nowadays, so it's good to set your budget before you go. This will help narrow your focus and prevent you from getting caught up in the buying frenzy with a price tag you might regret.
  3. Ladies, will you want a male or female bike?Nowadays, most females opt for male models with cross bars, but if you have mobility limits, you may want to consider a female model sans crossbar.
  4. Be prepared to hop on. Make sure you’re dressed appropriately (translation: leave the heels and skirts at home) because you’ll be trying out bikes to make sure heights and seats are right for you.
  5. Look for value-adds. Pedalinx offers a lifetime of basic tune-ups with every new bike purchase, for instance. With the average Toronto tune-up ringing in at $60 these days, this is huge added value. Or, if you don’t have all the money to purchase now, look for financing offers. Pedalinx has a financing plan that lets you put $0 down and charges 0% interest when you pay over 12 months.

Now that you’re prepped for the Bike Show, make sure you’re also prepped for biking. Some Simple conditioning exercises can help make sure you don’t pull anything your first time out! Happy trails!
